When to Skip the Fabric Softener And What to Try Instead

Fabric softener is a great way of softening your clothes and helping them to smell great at the end of the wash. But, have you ever considered what goes into your average fabric softener?
In order to soften the clothes and make sure the smell lingers for an extended period, many manufacturers use chemicals. Unfortunately, the chemicals have the potential to damage the environment and cause health problems for you and your family.

You’ll also find that some items of clothing will not benefit from fabric softeners, there are a number of safe options for fabric softeners.

When to Skip the Fabric Softener And What to Try Instead

Skipping The Fabric Softener

Workout clothes are generally designed to move water away from your body; helping you to stay cool and dry. Unfortunately, your conventional fabric softeners will leave a fine coating on your clothes that will prevent this from happening.

You’ll need to use a specialized, natural laundry and fabric care detergent to avoid this being an issue.

It’s not just sportswear that should avoid fabric softeners; microfiber cloths and materials also suffer if washed with them. Even towels and children’s sleepwear can have issues thanks to the coating that the fabric softener leaves behind.

The Alternatives

As already mentioned, a natural detergent that doesn’t have harsh chemicals can be your best answer; allowing you to wash your clothes normally and leave them smelling fresh.
But, there are other options you can consider:

● Vinegar

You can put ½ cup of white vinegar into your machine as part of the rinse cycle. This will soften your clothes and the smell will dissipate during the normal washing cycle. Leaving you with fresh, soft clothes; without chemicals in them.

● Baking Soda

Another option is to use ½ cup baking soda. This can have the same effect as white vinegar but it is essential to allow this to soak in the water before you add the clothes. This means, if you’re using it in a machine, you’ll need to mix it with water and allow the baking soda to dissolve before you put the mix in the machine.

You can then add it through the detergent channel or even soak your clothes in it for 30 minutes before putting them into the machine.

● Foil Balls

These are great to add to your dryer to attract static cling, in the process it will improve the softness of your clothes. It actually works very well with the vinegar rinse to ensure clean clothes, that are soft and don’t smell of vinegar.

Restore Your Older Clothes

You may notice that your new clothes may be much softer than your old clothes. That’s because they haven’t been tortured by chemically laden fabric softeners.

You can restore their softness by using vinegar in the rinse cycle and adding wool dryer balls into your dryer; along with a foil ball.

Once you’ve finished the cycle and found your clothes are softer you’ll appreciate why it is so important to use eco-friendly, non-toxic laundry detergents.

If you don’t believe me try it for yourself and tell me the results; you’ll be amazed.
