Jewellery Items Worn by an Indian Bride

It is interesting to know that bridal jewellery items differ from region to region depending upon the culture and religion. While neckpieces, earrings, rings etc are common jewellery pieces some items like toe rings, mangalsutra etc are exclusive to only a few communities. There can be a speck of doubt regarding what a bride should have in her bridal collection in case of inter religion or inter-cultural marriages. Listed below are some very common jewellery items that are worn by brides in the different regions of India:

 

Jewellery Items Worn by an Indian Bride

 

1. Set – Necklace, Rings and Earrings

Both rings with hathphools, necklace and earrings are included in the bridal set which is the main jewellery set. However, in most of the parts of India a ring exchange is done between the bride and groom. During this ceremony mostly latest gold ring is used. Some even go for platinum and diamond depending upon their budget. Earrings are mostly in the form of jhumka and is often matched with the design of the neck pieces in the set.

2. Mangalsutra

It is exclusive to Hindu brides and married women. A mangalsutra is an auspicious jewellery item that a husband puts around the wife’s neck during marriage. The woman wears it for the rest of her life until her husband expires. This item is made up of black and golden beads with a gold pendant.

3. Noserings

Nosering or Nath is an essential bridal jewellery item in some parts of India. It can be a simple stud made of gold or precious stone. More elaborate rings are also worn by brides with a long chain running to the back of the ear tucked into the hair. The noserings can worn without piercings too.

4. Anklets and Toe Rings

Anklets made of gold or silver are worn by brides across India which may also have little bells that jingle. Toe rings made of gold or silver are worn by brides mostly in South India.

5. Bracelets and Bangles

Ideally daily wear gold bangles are worn by married women and it is considered to be inauspicious to keep their wrist empty. Hence, brides wear gold bangles, silver bangles, bangles embellished with stones etc on their wedding day. Colourful churris or thin bangles made of glass are also worn in a set of 12 in each wrist by brides.

6. Kamarbandh or Waistband

Kamarbandh is another traditional bridal jewellery item that is worn around the waist. It is made in the chain form out of silver or gold with stone embellishments. It goes well with the bridal saree and helps to hold it in place.

7. Mangtika

Mangtika is popular in almost all Hindu marriages and often comes with a headband. It is matched with the heavily designed necklace. Mangtika is also made up of gold and silver with stone fittings. It is worn on the middle partition of hair.

8. Armlet

It is worn around the arms and is often made up of gold and silver.
