Water is used every day, in homes across the world, when food is being prepared. It can be used to wash fruit and vegetables, or when boiling foods such as rice. However, it’s important to pay attention to the type of water that you use when cooking. The water that comes from the tap may not be as safe as you might think.
Many people argue that any bacteria present in water is killed off during the boiling process. This may be true, but it does not apply when you are washing food under the tap, and boiling does not get rid of any pesticides or other chemicals which may be present in tap water.
How tap water gets contaminated
Most of the time, you cannot see any dirt or chemicals that are in the tap water in your home. This does not mean that they are not there. Water is treated with the chemical chlorine before it’s pumped along pipes to your home. On its way, it picks up dirt and other potentially harmful substances, such as pesticides. By the time that water comes from your tap, it has been exposed to many contamination possibilities. If you cook using this water, you are exposing all the food that you eat to the contaminants, and are at risk of taking them into your body when you eat the food.
Should you use bottled water instead?
If tap water is potentially dangerous, due to the presence of contaminants, you may be thinking that using bottled water is a better idea. In fact, bottled water is not guaranteed to be any safer than tap water. It also has another disadvantage. Plastic water bottles are a major source of the discarded plastic that is currently polluting our planet. For this reason, it’s best to avoid buying any bottled water, for drinking or to use while cooking.
The benefits of filtered water when cooking
The best way to make water safe for washing food, and cooking, is to filter the water that comes from the taps in your kitchen. Water filtration systems work to remove chemicals, dirt and other pollutants from water. For instance, the reverse osmosis water filter first removes any sediment that is present in the water then goes on to remove other contaminants such as chemicals. It also has a post filter which helps to ensure that the water is great tasting. This is important if you are using it to wash food, or while cooking.
It may seem as though tap water should be safe to use when you are cooking meals in your kitchen. However, this water could be contaminated. Although this contamination is unlikely to have any immediate effect, it can lead to issues with health over a period of time. Make sure that you are not putting yourself, or your family, at risk and filter tap water before you use it.
