Regular usage of your sewing machine does leave it dirty and in need of proper cleaning and oiling. The cleaning of the sewing machine helps remove dust, lint, and thread while the oiling process helps maintain the inner mechanics in smooth running condition. A poorly cleaned sewing machine will pose some challenges when sewing and this can be prevented by making sure that everything is done well and in a timely manner. Your sewing machine can serve you for many years if properly cleaned and maintained while the opposite is true. As Brother is among the best sewing machines brands, visit https://sewingmachinebuffs.
Where to start?
The first step before cleaning and oiling your sewing machine should be to read through the user manual and see what the manufacturer proposes. Different sewing machines have different mechanisms and the manufacturers will always help guide you on how to not only operate but also assemble or disassemble the machine.
Disassemble the plate and needle foot
Start the cleaning process by removing all the clutter from the top and around your sewing machine. If there are any threads, fabrics or bobbin installed or that have been in use, make sure you take them off as part of your cleaning. Once this is done, remove the needle carefully from the foot and then remove the plate using an appropriate screwdriver. This will enable you to reach the parts that are located deeper into the machine.
Brush the bottom bobbin case gently
You should have some microfiber cloths or a small, fine brush or a lint brush to help you with the cleaning process. Using any of these, clean off the dust and lint which can be seen in the bobbin case but do it gently. The brush should be swept outwards so as to eliminate the dust and lint rather than driving it deeper into the bobbin case. You can use the microfiber cloth to clean your sewing machine and work surfaces on a daily basis. It is important to note that pressurized gas shouldn’t be used to clean the sewing machine. Blowing the dust and lint from the sewing machine only works to push the dirt deeper making it firmly entrenched into the machines’ crevices.
Replace bobbin case cover
Once you’re sure that the lint and dust have been brushed off to your satisfaction, the next step is to replace the needle plate in its place. Make sure it’s screwed properly but avoid tightening the screws so much otherwise you might face difficulties when unscrewing the next time. You should also wipe the exterior parts of your sewing machine as part of the cleaning process.
Oil the machine properly
While considering this step, it’ll be worth noting that different machines require different approaches when it comes to oiling. The best thing is to check your sewing machine’s manual and know how or which parts should be oiled for maximum efficiency. However, even the best sewing machine for home use does require some oiling to keep it in optimum condition and maintain efficiency.
That said, you can oil any parts that do not have threads. Generally, holes that have threads are designed for screws and these shouldn’t be oiled. Those without threads should, however, be oiled. Make sure to add a drop of two to the outer ring of the bobbin hook and inside the machine’s hook race. The hook race is designed to fit the bobbin hook and is basically a silver ring located on the inside. On the other hand, the bobbin hook is supposed to slides along the outer ring using the outer ring.
Test the machine
Once you’re satisfied with the process, clean the surface of the sewing machine, replace the needle with a new one and then plug it into the power source. Start and run it for several minutes to allow the oil to spread evenly through the gears as well as other places.
You will notice that your sewing machine runs smoothly and more efficiently after the cleaning and oiling process and this is something you should do regularly.
It sure was nice when you said that your sewing machine will run smoothly and more efficiently when you clean it. This is something that I will surely do after I have our sewing machine repaired. It has not been working smoothly since last month, so I am planning to have it repaired properly.
