If you’re simply restyling your front door or completely changing it to install an energy efficient door, the whole process will surely be quick and easy. Installing a new door is a simple home remodeling project but the outcome makes a big impact on the overall exterior and interior look of your house.
What happens to your old door then? Some of you would just dispose of it right away, or salvage the wood, but did you know that you can turn your old door into something useful?
You might want to hold on to it because I will share with you 5 smart ways on how to recycle old doors and turn them into beautiful pieces of furniture.
From Door to Hall Tree
Make your entryway more inviting by repurposing an old door and transforming it into a hall tree. Sketch your design first, making plans for whatever features you need — coat hooks, table, storage bench, or shelves. You can build it by putting together all the pieces if you’ve got the tools and the skills, but if you don’t, you can simply recline the door on the wall and place a table or a storage box in front of it.
From Door to Mirrored Vanity Desk
Your old door can be upcycled to a vanity table with a mirror. You will be needing a wall mirror, a desk, and a chair. Secure the mirror onto the door then get it behind the desk. You may want to paint the door, the desk, and the chair with the same paint color or keep everything as is for an eclectic look. The best version of an old door turned into a vanity desk that I’ve seen has this shabby chic, weathered appeal.
From Door to Headboard
That old double door of yours that goes up to the ceiling could become a unique headboard. For single doors, attach it horizontally to the wall. Barn-inspired doors will give the bedroom a rustic vibe while the modern ones will make the bed look more elegant. For this project, I prefer that the door matches or complements the bed. But sometimes it’s okay to bend the rules — mix old with new — because everything doesn’t always need to match. Maybe paint the headboard a bold color to make it an accent in the bedroom?
From Door to Multi-Functional Table
Why not repurpose your old door into a table? The door turned long table will be a great addition to your garden or somewhere in the house that you and your kids hang out often. It can be turned into a coffee table, a play table for the kids to share and play their toys with, or a worktable to hold your materials and implements. Whatever it is, it’s sure to be multi-functional.
From Door to Chalkboard
Your kitchen might be missing something — a chalkboard to plan your meals? Let the chalkboard paint do its magic and turn your old door into a chalkboard! You may now have a message center, a decorative Quote of the Day stand, or a meal planner. You can even turn it into a freedom wall wherein your kids can write or post whatever they want and make everyday fun and interesting.
Recycling old doors is fun and easy that one can easily come up with his or her own masterpiece. If you have proper tools and materials (plus a little inspiration) and lots of patience, you can create one-of-a-kind pieces that are both lovely and functional.
